Abstract

The goal of this study is to analyze the impact of World War II on the government policies of control and repression against immigrant workers in Brazil. This impact is visible in official reports, police inquiries about the foreigners (both at rural and urban labor) and the laws directed against immigrants from the Axis nations. This article argues that it is necessary to be attentive to the differences and resemblances between the ways of dealing with Japanese, Italian and German immigrants, in order to articulate racial debates and labor policies of that period.
