Cuícas, pelotas and coroas: labor and popular culture in São Paulo (1950-1964)

Abstract

The present article studies two forms of demonstration of the workforce culture: the parties schedule and the leisure organization. The analysis focus on the two largest and active categories of São Paulo city proletarian class, the metallurgys and textile workers, and runs over the period between Vargas second turn, in 1950 and the 1964 civil military action. Special attention was given to the role of the metallurgy and textile trade unions in the organization of the schedule and workers’ leisure. It is an attempt to explain values, meanings and points of views presents in events, such as Junine parties (a typical Brazilian festival) and Labor Day celebrations and in productions as the workers poetry.
