Abstract

The Revolt of the Lash and his legacy to scholars and social movements are described in this paper. The reader will be able to understand the impressment and discipline systems in Brazilian Navy between Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries. Such systems were directly related to the uprising of 1910. Overwork aboard of powerful warships bought by the Republican government in that year increased the animosity between sailors and officers. These problems lead to the revolt of the sailors, most of them descendants of blacks who experienced slavery. The article also explores the legacy of this history and its penetration into Brazilian Communist Party and social movements.
