Abstract
In the second half of the 19th century, Brazil underwent some important economic and social transformations; the main one was the capitalism implantation. In São Paulo, with the emergence of a growing consumer market from coffee activities, providing urban and economic growth in many country side cities of the state and the increase of several urban centers along the railways, the economic importance of supplying them relying on the manufacture of local products has broadened the basis of São Paulo industry. On the other hand, the elaboration of an economic thought in defense of the industrial activity as a social and economic progress ideal also became present.
