Abstract

This study analyzes the various relationships established between the "Catholic sectors" and the Workers Party (PT) in Greater Sao Paulo. The article focuses on the years between 1978 and 1982, encompassing the first discussions about political liberalization and the creation of new parties, the first reactions and positions from the Catholic sectors facing the idea, emergence and movements of the PT formation, as well as the pre-election period and the first election involving the party in 1982. Thus, we seek to emphasize the discussions, rejections, tensions, conflicts points, approaches and even supports that have developed between the various subjects of the Catholic Church towards the emergence and consolidation of PT.
